چکیده

Systematic relationships of southern populations of short-tailed shrews (genus Blarina) are assessed on the basis of univariate and multivariate statistics. Populations are separated into two phena; southwestern short-tailed shrews are significantly larger morphometrically than southeastern forms. The two phena apparently represent distinct species. The name Blarina hylophaga is available for southwestern populations, and the name Blarina carolinensis is here restricted to short-tailed shrews in the southeastern

Systematics of Isolated Populations of Short-tailed Shrews (soricidae: Blarina) in Texas

Two isolated and taxonomically unassigned populations of short-tailed shrews (Blarina) exist in Texas, 1 in the Lost Pines region including Bastrop County and 1 at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge on the Gulf Coast. Molecular and morphological methods were used to determine the systematic status of the 2 disjunct Texas populations. Multivariate analyses of size-influenced cranial measurements w...

Identification and characterization of the contact zone between short-tailed shrews (Blarina) in Iowa and Missouri

Short-tailed shrews (genus Blarina Gray, 1838) are characterized by divergent karyotypes and are genetically distinct. Blarina species are similar morphologically but, in most cases, can be distinguished morphometrically. Blarina distributions tend to be parapatric along well-defined contact zones; however, it has been suggested that the northern short-tailed shrew (Blarina brevicauda (Say, 182...

Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) of the Mammalian Order Insectivora

The coccidia (protistan phylum Apicomplexa Levine, 1970) comprise a large group of obligate intracellular parasites commonly found in all classes of vertebrate hosts and in some invertebrates. This review focuses on those species within the Eimeriidae because they are among the most prevalent and speciose of all parasite groups, and there is no taxonomic summation currently available for those ...
